Saint Gabriel Taurin Dufresse
Feast Day: September 14th
Gabriel Taurin Dufresse, of Lezoux, France, was ordained a priest in 1774 and sent to Sichuan, China, by the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Despite facing severe persecution, he led his flock with courage, traveling secretly to preach and celebrate Mass. In 1801, he was appointed bishop and continued his pastoral work under immense hardship.
Arrested in 1815, Bishop Dufresse was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately beheaded for refusing to renounce Christ. His final words echoed his unwavering devotion: “I have lived for Christ, and I will die for Him.” He was beatified in 1900 and canonized among the Martyr Saints of China in 2000.
Let us pray for courage in the face of trials and for the grace to stand strong in our Catholic Faith, no matter the cost!
